Former No. 1 pick considering contract offer from Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have made a contract offer to Jadeveon Clowney after hosting the free-agent defensive end on a two-day visit from Tuesday through Wednesday, according to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson

Anderson added that despite the offer, Clowney "is taking some time to think it through" before putting ink to paper.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Clowney has bounced around the NFL in recent seasons, playing for four teams over the past five years and failing to land a multi-year deal in three consecutive offseasons — a trend that is almost certainly bound to continue this summer.

In 2022, Clowney's downward trajectory as a pass-rusher continued as he recorded just two sacks in an injury-riddled 12-game campaign for the Cleveland Browns. He has amassed three sacks or fewer in three of the past four seasons. Still, the three-time Pro Bowler remains a stout edge setter and quality run defender, earning a 74.3 run grade last season from Pro Football Focus. (A score between 70-84 is considered a "starter" grade by PFF.)

At 30, Clowney is far from the game-wrecking presence he was earlier in his career with the Houston Texans. Still, the South Carolina product is a low-risk option for a Ravens team seeking depth on the edge of their defense.

Baltimore is looking to replace Justin Houston and his team-leading 9.5 sacks from 2022 after the veteran pass-rusher signed with the Carolina Panthers earlier this month.

Furthermore, Tyus Bowser has yet to participate in training camp as he remains on the non-football injury list. At the end of minicamp, Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters Bowser's knee had "flared up for some reason," via Ravens.com's Ryan Mink. Bowser is one season removed from a career-high seven sacks.
