CM Punk Turned Down Knockoff ‘Cult Of Personality’ Theme In WWE, Pushed For The Real Song

Living Colour singer Corey Glover is happy with how CM Punk using their hit song “Cult of Personality” in wrestling has turned out.

Punk used the song on the indies, then debuted the song in WWE in 2011 after he won the WWE Championship from John Cena. He walked out of WWE after Money in the Bank 2011, returning weeks later with the now-iconic theme.

He kept the song since then. Punk used Cult of Personality as his walkout song for both UFC and AEW, and upon his return to the WWE last year. The band even performed the song live for CM Punk’s entrance at WrestleMania 29.

Licensing the song for pro wrestling has made Living Color a lot of money. Lead singer Corey Glover recently appeared on Drinks with Johnny (via Post Wrestling) to discuss CM Punk using their song in wrestling.

He claimed he became a wrestling fan due to Punk and explained the story of how Punk kept the song close to his heart.

“I am now (a pro wrestling fan) now that (CM) Punk’s around. Yeah, sure. And then to find out that this guy, who went from backyard to the WWE, WWF to back to (AEW) and then back to WWE and the whole time, he never let go of Cult of Personality as his entrance music, and the way he tells it was like, when he was in Little League in the suburbs of Chicago, the team’s entrance music was “Cult of Personality.” Evidently, they had a very progressive coach and he really dug the song. So he kept it his whole career.”

Corey Glover also revealed that WWE’s use of the song makes them a lot of money. He explained that WWE licenses the song for events and “seasons” of Raw. Because CM Punk is featured prominently on these shows, the band are paid a lot for use of the song.

When asked about how business between the band and the WWE is, Taylor jokingly replied that it keeps his kids happy, noting that there’s a “fat check” for it. He then shared how Punk fought to get the genuine song in WWE instead of a knockoff version.

“…Like I said, back in the day when Punk was first going to WWF, they were like, ‘Okay, so we’re gonna get you your own entrance music.’ He’s like, ‘No, I already have entrance music.’ He made it a point that ‘I’m not changing my entrance music.’ Because they had their own music division of the WWF and they were gonna have somebody make up a song that sounded similar to Cult of Personality. But that was gonna be his entrance music. ‘No, I don’t want that. I want the real thing.’ He’s like one of the talent that actually got that in his contract that wherever he goes, that goes with him… Car payments are good because of CM Punk (he laughed).”
